Three serial blasts rocked Mumbai today as the busy streets of Opera House, Zaveri bazaar and Dadar were left in screams, fire and the death of seventeen individuals while more than eighty were injured. We Indians seem to have lost count of how many lives have been traumatized in Mumbai in the last two decades by persistent attacks and blasts. This time however, there is a succession which seems to have escaped a lot of eyes till now. The first one being that it was the third time that the Zaveri Bazaar area was attacked – was also a center of destruction in the ‘93 blasts.
Another interesting trivia is that today marks the twenty fourth birthday of Ajmal Kasab – the sole terrorist survivor from the last attack that had troubled Mumbai – the 26th November attack. No one can forget the evening of 26th November, 2008 when ten terrorists entered the city and carried out the three day attacks that left more than 160 people dead and thousands of families devastated. Kasab was the sole survivor of the attack and had been apprehended while reining terror at Cama Hospital and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station.
Kasab had been given a death sentence by a trial court, prior to which the Metropolitan Court’s Bar Association (having more than 1000 lawyers as members) had declared that none of its members would defend the accused of the Mumbai attacks.
Home minister P. Chidambaram has said in his interview that it is a terrorist attack which is exemplified from the close timing of the explosions. The three blasts had happened in the ten-minute margin between 6:50 and 7:00 pm. Although no terrorist group has come forward to take claim, it is difficult not to notice the fact that the date of the blasts coincide with the birth date of the person who had reined terror on this city three years back.
If it is indeed the case, only time would tell but for now, we at The Unknown Pen, sympathize with the loss of the seventeen families and hundreds more which have seen their life troubled once again in this city.
